Four kinds of care that hold a child steady

Bright Futures Kids Foundation supports a child through every part of a crisis, not just the first emergency. Emergency financial assistance keeps a family housed and fed, counseling steadies a child's mental health, healthcare access covers the visits and prescriptions that get skipped, and tutoring keeps schoolwork from slipping away. Together these four pillars give vulnerable youth both immediate relief and a long-term path forward.

  • Emergency aid

Rent, utilities, food, and travel costs covered within days of a family asking for help.

  • Counseling

Sessions with licensed therapists so a child can process loss, instability, or trauma.

  • Healthcare access

Clinic visits, prescriptions, dental care, and glasses for children without coverage.

  • Education

Tutoring, supplies, and after-school support that keep a student on grade level.

The four pillars

What programs does Bright Futures run for children in need?

Bright Futures runs four connected programs: emergency financial assistance, counseling and mental health care, healthcare access, and education and tutoring. A family can enter through any one of them and receive the others, because a child rarely faces only a single crisis. Each program below shows the outcome it delivered over the last twelve months.

Emergency Financial Assistance

Rapid rent, utility, food, and transport help that keeps a child housed, fed, and in the same school during a family crisis.

Families never have to pick just one

A single caseworker stays with the family across every program, so a rent grant can lead into counseling, a clinic visit, and a tutor without a new application each time.

Inside the programs

How each Bright Futures program actually works

Every program below follows the same promise: a child in need gets real help fast, then keeps getting support long after the crisis passes. Here is exactly how emergency aid is distributed, how counseling sessions are scheduled, what healthcare access covers, and how tutoring keeps a student on grade level.

Emergency aid

How emergency financial assistance is distributed

Emergency funds are paid directly to the landlord, utility company, or pharmacy within 72 hours of an approved request, so no family has to wait on a reimbursement. A caseworker reviews the household situation the same day a referral arrives from a school, clinic, or shelter partner.

  • Rent and utility arrears — one-time payments that stop an eviction or a shut-off notice before a child loses a stable place to sleep.
  • Food and essentials — grocery cards, diapers, and winter clothing delivered through our school partners within the week.
  • Paid directly to vendors — families never handle the funds, which keeps the process simple and fully auditable.

How counseling and mental health sessions work

Every child referred to our counseling program is matched with a licensed therapist within two weeks, and the first twelve sessions are fully funded by donors. Sessions run weekly at a partner clinic, at school during the day, or by secure video when transportation is the barrier.

  • Trauma-informed care — therapists are trained in grief, housing instability, and family separation, the situations our children face most.
  • Family sessions included — parents and guardians can join at no cost, because a child heals faster when the household heals too.
  • Continuing support — when twelve sessions are not enough, we extend funding rather than close the case.

Healthcare

What healthcare access covers for a child

Healthcare access pays for the care a family has been postponing, from a first well-child checkup to glasses, dental work, and prescription refills. Our coordinators also enroll eligible children in public insurance so coverage continues after our funding ends.

  • Clinic visits and immunizations — scheduled with partner pediatric practices, with transportation arranged when needed.
  • Vision, dental, and prescriptions — the everyday costs that quietly keep a child out of the classroom.
  • Insurance enrollment help — a coordinator walks the family through the paperwork line by line, in their language.

Education

How tutoring supports students through the school year

Students meet a trained tutor twice a week for the full academic year, not for a short summer burst. Tutors receive the child's classroom goals from their teacher, so every session targets the exact skill that is holding the student back.

  • Reading and math fundamentals — small-group sessions after school, with progress checked every six weeks.
  • Supplies and technology — backpacks, books, and a loaner laptop so homework is possible at home.
  • Graduation and beyond — older students get help with college applications, scholarships, and first-job preparation.

Eligibility and access

Who qualifies for these programs, and how does a family apply?

Any family caring for a child under 18 who is facing a financial, health, or school crisis can apply, and no referral is required. We do not ask for immigration status, and a household can receive support from more than one program at the same time. If you are unsure whether you qualify, apply anyway — a caseworker will review your situation and point you to the right help.

Who qualifies for each program

Emergency financial assistance
Households at or below 250% of the federal poverty line facing eviction, a utility shutoff, or an unexpected bill within the next 30 days.
Counseling and mental health
Children ages 5 to 18 who are uninsured, underinsured, or on a waitlist longer than four weeks for licensed therapy.
Healthcare access
Any child without active coverage, or with an unfilled prescription, missed well-visit, or needed dental and vision care.
Education and tutoring
Students in grades K through 12 reading or doing math below grade level, or who need supplies, fees, or exam costs covered.

How families apply, step by step

  1. 01

Tell us what is happening using the intake form, a phone call, or a walk-in visit to the community center. It takes about ten minutes.

  2. 02

A caseworker calls back within two business days to confirm details and gather proof of income, residence, or enrollment where it is needed.

  3. 03

Emergency requests are decided within 72 hours. Counseling, healthcare, and tutoring placements are scheduled within two weeks of approval.

  4. 04

Your caseworker stays with the family for a full year, checking in each quarter and connecting you to other programs as needs change.

Not sure where to start? Contact our family support team and we will walk you through it.

Fund a program

Choose the program your gift should support

Your donation funds one of the four pillars on this page — emergency aid, counseling, healthcare access, or education and tutoring. Last year, gifts from donors like you covered rent for 410 families, 2,900 counseling sessions, and a full school year of tutoring for 1,200 students. Pick a program below and your support starts working within the same week.

Every gift is processed securely and receipted for tax purposes. Prefer to support all four programs at once? Choose the general fund on the giving form and our caseworkers direct it to the most urgent need that week.
